About This Project

The rise of popularity and integration of hipster culture into mass media and fashion is an example of what was considered “anti-fashion” becoming fashionable. Hipsterism is a reaction to the commercialized and consumerist society of the 21st century. The stress of vintage, hand-made, and nostalgic became tools to assert a sort of social dominance. Instead of judging one’s value with economic capital like high-fashion and money, hipsterism emphasizes one’s value on “cultural capital” like dictating what is considered “cool” and being early adopters to novelties.
